So How Does It Work?

We tutor our online students through Zoom meetings, and all you need to participate is a computer or device, such as a cell phone or tablet, and a live internet connection.  We use a whiteboard application called Open Board, which is a software designed to allow educators and students to write, draw, and annotate on the same screen together to allow for an excellent learning experience in math for solving equations, drawing geometrical shapes, etc.  Click on the video to the right for a brief demonstration.

One of the best features of the Open Board platform is that it allows for uploading images, including homework pages, test reviews, study guides, etc. so we can see exactly what the student is seeing.  If students need help with work brought home from their school, they will be asked to simply take a few snap shots of the material on a cell phone and email them to us prior to the session in order for us to best prepare for our time together.  In order for the student(s) to draw on the screen alongside the tutor, they may use any of the following:

– A tablet (such as an iPad) with a stylus
– A computer mouse
– Simply use their finger on their cell phone or tablet

Of course, none of this new technology could ever replace the good old fashioned pencil and paper when it comes to math.  So if students prefer, they can simply work the problems along with the tutor on their own paper.  Our sessions are extremely interactive, as we feel this is the best approach to student success.  After we model example problems on our end, we require students to work problems on their own as we coach them through the process so they can become self-proficient.  Students need practice, repetition, and then more practice.  This is vital!
